Matilde Salinas Cantu

Matilde Salinas Cantu, age 64, passed away Sunday, August 18, 2019 in Kermit. Matilde was born on August 23, 1954 in Los Aldamas, Nuevo Leon, Mexico to Leopoldo and Eulalia (Salinas) Cantu. She married Gustavo Cantu in 1978 in Gral Bravo, MX.

Matilde enjoyed singing and reading. She loved to listen to music. Other favorite pastimes include shopping and working on crossword puzzles. Matilde was a member of the Iglesia Apostelica de la Fe en Cristo Jesus and she loved to worship the Lord.

Matilde is survived by her sons: Juvenal Cantu and wife Lisett of Hobbs, NM, Juventino Cantu and wife Dora of Odessa, TX, Americo Cantu of Hobbs, NM, and Azael Cantu and wife Clarissa of Timpson, TX; brothers: Mariano Cantu of Edinburg, TX, Onesimo Cantu of Denver City, TX, Simon Cantu of Gral Bravo, MX, Candelario Cantu of Gral Bravo, MX, and Ismael Cantu of Edinburg, TX; sisters: Gloria Cantu of Edinburg, TX and Rebeca Cantu of Gral Bravo, MX; and grandchildren: Angie, Merari, Gustavo, Esau, Melquisedec, Natanael, Jiret, and Nissi.

Matilde was preceded in death by her husband: Gustavo Cantu; parents: Leopaldo and Eulalia Cantu; and brother: Vicente Cantu.

Funeral Services will be held at 2:00 pm, Wednesday, August 21, 2019 at the First United Methodist Church in Kermit with Pastor Jesus Cantu officiating. Burial will follow at Kermit Cemetery. Pallbearers will be Juvenal Cantu, Juventino Cantu, Arnulfo Gonzalez, Azael Cantu, Candelario Cantu, and Ismael Cantu. Honorary pallbearers will include Americo Cantu and Simon Cantu.

Vickie Lou Frie

Vickie Lou Frie, age 68, passed away Wednesday, August 21, 2019 in Kermit, TX.  Vickie was born on December 20, 1950 to Kenneth and Mary (Wilder) Shelley in Kermit, Texas. She married Teddy Frie on January 2, 1970 in Kermit, TX and they shared 49 wonderful years together.

Vickie was a loving and caring person. She spent most of her time taking care of others. She was a certified nurse’s aide. Vickie enjoyed sewing in her free time. She was a very humorous person and everyone loved being around her. She was God’s gift to all who knew her.

Vickie is survived by her husband: Teddy Frie of Wink, TX; son: Tommy Joe Frie and wife Tonya of Wink, TX; daughters: Kelley Frie of Monahans, TX and Brandy McKinzie and husband Bandy of Midland, TX; brothers-in-law: Thomas Broome of Kermit, TX and William Broome and wife Janie of Fairview, KS; sisters: Loretta Tarrango and husband Rudy of Reeds Port, OR and Melinda Compton and husband Randy of Midland, TX; grandchildren: Teddy Frie of Wink, TX, Kaitlynn Frie of Reeds Port, OR, Sarina Borrego and Nathaniel Barreras both of Monahans, TX, Bandy and Bryce McKinzie of Midland, TX, and sisters-in-law: Brenda Barron of Kermit, TX and Juanita Clements and husband Joey of Eunice, NM.

Vickie was preceded in death by her parents: Kenneth and Mary Shelley; grandson: Tyllere Frie; and step-dad: Lowell Lund.

A Memorial Service will be held at 10:00 am, Saturday, August 24, 2019 at Family Services Funeral Chapel in Kermit, TX officiated by Brother Joe Mohler.  Honorary Pallbearers will include: Teddy Frie, Bandy John McKinzie, Bryce McKinzie, Nathan Barreras, Sarina Borrego, and Kaitlynn Frie.

Floyd Underwood 2019
Floyd Harold Underwood Sr.

Floyd Harold Underwood Sr., age 61, passed away Wednesday, August 21, 2019 in Kermit, TX.  Floyd was born on March 4, 1958 to James Paul Sr. and Eunice Pearl (Lofton) Underwood in Kermit, TX.

Floyd was an outgoing person who loved life and his family. He enjoyed taking trips to the lake to go fishing. He also enjoyed riding motorcycles, BBQing, and music.  Floyd loved the Lord. He was always reading and quoting the Bible. Floyd had a unique personality and even performed as a bit actor in a movie.

Floyd is survived by his sons: Floyd Underwood Jr. and Jonathan Underwood, both of Kermit, TX; daughters: Stephanie Loflin and husband, Melvin of Fayetteville, TN and Linda Sue Underwood of Kermit, TX; brothers: Paul Underwood Jr. of Kermit, TX, Glenn Underwood Sr. and wife Marina of Wink, TX; twin brother Lloyd Underwood of Kermit, TX, and Aaron Frank Underwood of Robert Lee, TX; sisters: Donnell Dodson and husband John of Kermit, TX, Donna Underwood of Lawton, OK, and Linda Wascom and husband Robert of Burnsflat, OK; grandchildren: Matthew, Kaylie, Harley, Damien, Dakota, Audri, Brianna, Nathan, Alivia, Miguel, and Lilly; great-grandchildren: Adelyn and Aleah.

Floyd was preceded in death by his parents: James Paul and Eunice Underwood and brothers: Steven Underwood and Vernon Underwood.

A Funeral Service will be held at 2:00 pm, Friday, August 23, 2019 at Family Services Funeral Chapel in Kermit, TX officiated by Syble Stone.  Burial will follow at Kermit Cemetery. Pallbearers will be: Matthew Underwood, Nathan Loflin, Damien Vaught, Millard Dodson, John Paul Dodson, and Glenn Underwood, Jr.  Honorary Pallbearers will include: Paul Underwood, Jr., Glenn Underwood, Sr., Lloyd Underwood, Aaron Frank Underwood, and Dakota Vaught.

In lieu of flowers, the family has requested that a donation be made to a cancer charity of your choice.

Irene Grace Wilson Smith

Irene Grace Wilson Smith, age 96, passed away Thursday, August 22, 2019 in Jal, NM.  Irene was born on May 7, 1923 to Jasper T. and Gracie M (Rowlett) Jones in Malaga, NM. She married Cloyd Dee Smith on June 16, 1973 in Lovington, NM and they shared 46 wonderful years together.

Irene was a member of the First Baptist Church in Jal, NM. She was very involved with the Lea County Cowbelles. She enjoyed making quilts and was a member of the Piecemakers Quilt Club. She was a very caring person and spent many hours volunteering with Hospice.

Irene is survived by her husband:  Cloyd Dee Smith of Jal, NM; son: John Wayne Wilson and wife Rachel of Aztec, NM; step-son: Donnie Smith and wife Lavena of Jal, NM; step-daughter: Joyce Pittam and husband Rick of Jal, NM; grandchildren: Tasha Earl and Donavon, Brittany Wilson, Cree Gurley, Curt and Daana Pittam, Tracy and Ara Baten, Jeannie and John Terry, and Desiree Lopez; great-grandchildren: Anaya Earl, Atiyanna Earl, Adriyel Earl, Josiah Wilson, Kaidyn Wilson, Zane Pittam, Zaac Pittam, Za’Leigh Pittam, Allen Baten, Kelly Baten, and Cayla Lopez.

Irene was preceded in death by her parents:  Jasper and Gracie Jones; first spouse: Wayne Bryan Wilson; brothers: Earl Jones, Richard Jones, and JT Jones; and sisters: Ina Mae Jones and Billie Faye Fulfer.

Funeral Services will be held at 10:00 am, Tuesday, August 27, 2019 at First Baptist Church in Jal, NM officiated by Pastor Jody O’ Briant.  Interment will follow at Cooper Cemetery in Jal, NM. Pallbearers will be Gregg Fulfer, Rowdy Fulfer, Cory Fulfer, Perry Fulfer, Don Jones, Tim Jones, Terry Jones and Curt Pittam. Honorary Pallbearers will include Adriyel Earl, Josiah Wilson, Kaidyn Wilson, Zane Pittam, Zaac Pittam, and Allen Baten.

Family visitation will take place on Monday, August 26, 2019 at Family Services Funeral Chapel in Kermit, TX from 6:00 – 8:00 pm.

Ronald Loy "Ron" Saverance

Ronald Loy "Ron" Saverance

Ronald Loy "Ron" Saverance passed away August 22,2019 at the age of 93, in New Braunfels, TX. He was born April 20, 1926 in South Taylor Co. outside of Goldsboro, TX to Charles Albert Saverance and Ollie Stokes Saverance.

He served in the Army in Korea. After the Army, he worked as a postal worker and in 1953 began working for El Paso Natural Gas and was employed for 33 years, until he retired. After that retirement, he bought a Germania Insurance Agency. He and his family lived in Kermit, Texas for many years. Ron worked in several churches in the area as a music director, including Grace Temple Baptist, and Belview Baptist in Kermit. After moving to Odessa, he became a member of First Baptist Church and enjoyed singing in their choir.

Ron is preceded in death by his parents; his son: Ronnie Elliot Saverance, his brothers: Wilson Saverance, Felton Saverance and Marshall Saverance.

He is survived by his daughter of Seguin, TX: Rita Mantooth; son-in-law: Ed Mantooth, daughter-in-law: Susan Saverance, grandchildren: Michael Mantooth and wife Alyssa, Kelli Mantooth, Nathan Saverance and wife Nettie and Amy Saverance Endecot and husband Johnny; and also by many great-grandchildren, nieces and nephews.

After suffering with Alzheimer's, he is with his Lord and Savior.

There will be a family visitation prior to the funeral from 10:00 - 11:00 am on Thursday, August 29, 2019 at Family Services Funeral Chapel.

A funeral service will be held at 11:00 am on Thursday, August 29, 2019 at Family Services Funeral Chapel with Pastor Michael Mantooth officiating. Burial will follow at Kermit cemetery. Pallbearers will be: Nathan Saverance, Nathaniel Saverance, Edward Mantooth, Kelli Mantooth, and Michael Mantooth.

Barry Mulloy Handlin

Barry Mulloy Handlin

Barry Mulloy Handlin, age 73, of Midland, TX, passed from this life on Friday, August 23, 2019. He was born in Kermit, TX on February 25, 1946 to Dillard Lloyd Handlin and Pansy (Mulloy) Handlin.

Barry graduated from Kermit High School and then joined the United States Air Force. He was a sergeant in the Air Force and served in the Vietnam War from 1968 - 1969. After serving, he went on to college and graduated with a Bachelor’s degree in Business Administration from the University of Texas, in El Paso. He then became a teacher with the Midland Independent School District.

He is survived by his long time loving companion: Lola Canney of Midland, TX; son: Eric Mulloy Handlin and his wife Korinna of Odessa; one daughter: Kari Wadsworth and her husband David of Tyler, TX; and brothers: Don Handlin and his wife Dee of Mason, TX; Larry Handlin and his wife Jane of Crane, TX; and eight grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents: Dillard and Pansy Handlin; and a brother: Phillip Handlin.

Graveside Services with military honors will be held at 10:00 am, Thursday, August 29, 2019 at Kermit Cemetery in Kermit, TX with Rev. Dudley Mullins officiating.

Rene Humberto Anaya

Rene Humberto Anaya, age 72, of Kermit, TX, passed from this life on Sunday, September 1, 2019. He was born in Ojinaga, MX on February 18, 1947 to Higinio and Berta (Rey) Anaya. Rene married Erlinda Hernandez on May 20, 1968 and they celebrated 51 years together.

Rene loved the Lord. He greatly enjoyed going to church, reading his Bible, and listening to Christian music.
He is survived by his wife: Erlinda Anaya of Kermit, TX; sons: Rene Anaya Jr. of Mexico and Jose Anaya of Kermit, TX; daughter: Blanca Lujan of Odessa, TX; brother: Sergio Anaya of Odessa, TX; and numerous grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents: Higinio and Berta Anaya; sons: Arturo Anaya and Javier Anaya; and several siblings.

Funeral Services will be held at 2:00 pm, Wednesday, September 4, 2019 at the First United Methodist Church in Kermit, TX with Pastor Robert Moreno officiating. Burial will follow at Kermit Cemetery. Pallbearers will include: Edgar Lujan, Jacob Lujan, Isai Lujan, Luis Salinas, Joe Natividad, and Ariana Natividad.

James H. Sharp
James H. Sharp, age 76, of Kermit, TX, passed from this life on Friday, September 4, 2019. He was born in Kermit, TX on August 20, 1943 to J. E. and India (Kueckelhan) Sharp. James married Billie (Keen) on December 22, 1962 and they celebrated 56 years together.

James lived life as a Cowboy, riding and roping. He had a deep love for his family, especially his kids, grandkids, and great-grandkids. The grandkids called him, "James" and the great-grandkids called him "Pa". He was a devoted Christian man and loved the Lord. James was a very hard worker and retired after 45 years with Southwestern Bell. James had a big heart and was always helping those in need and he had a love of reading Louis L'Amour Western novels.

He is survived by his wife: Billie Sharp of Kermit, TX; sons: Jim Sharp of Stephenville, TX and Dr. Jason Sharp and wife Dr. Laurie of Stephenville, TX.; daughter: Laurie Sharp of Kermit, TX; brother: Bill Sharp of Mt. Pleasant, TX; sister: Sherry Carman and husband Ed of Odessa, TX; grandchildren: Dakota Parker and husband Damion, Sierra Marcell and husband Jacob, Casey McAdams, Katie McAdams, Will Sharp, Katey Gordon and husband Dylan; Guthrie Long, and Brittany Long; great-grandchildren: Rheagan, Colson, and Keagan.

He was preceded in death by his parents: J. E. and India Sharp; brothers: James Sharp Jr.; sister-in-law: Mary Sharp; and granddaughter: Bailey Anthony.
A family visitation will be held from 6-8 pm, Friday, September 6, 2019 at Family Services Funeral Parlor in Kermit.

Funeral Services with will be held at 2:00 pm, Saturday, September 7, 2019 at Grace Temple Baptist Church in Kermit, TX with Pastor John Curry officiating. Burial will follow at Kermit Cemetery. Pallbearers will include: Jay Anthony, Cary Anthony, Bob Shipley, Lonnie White, Teddy Innskeep, Mariano Valenzuela, Gary Goforth, and Joe Hill. Honorary Pallbearers will include: Archie Mann, Willie Shipp, Andy Shipp, Jeff Shipp, and Tommy J. Pierce.

Ann Huda Medcalf, age 75, passed away on Wednesday, September 4, 2019 in Midland.  Ann was born on January 7, 1944 to Nicklous and Jewel (Goad) Huda in Ft. Gibson, Oklahoma. Ann married W.L. Medcalf on March 8, 1998 and they celebrated 21 years together.

Ann was a member of the Church of God. She enjoyed playing cards and crafting. Ann was known as Granny Ann by many children. She was known for always lending a helping hand to others.

Ann is survived by her husband: W.L. Medcalf of Kermit, TX; sons: Donald Huda of Kermit, TX, Howard Gould and wife Sira of Ft. Worth, TX, Dennis Gould and wife Suzanne of Abilene, TX, and John Blackwell of Washington; daughter: Mary Wright-McCourt and husband Bobby of Midland, TX; brothers: Junior Edwards and Kenneth Edwards; grandchildren: Blake Blackwell, Timothy Gould, David Gould, Brendan Gould, Trevor Gould, and Jacob Gould.

Ann was preceded in death by her parents: Nick and Jewel Huda; brothers: James Edwards and Lonnie Edwards; sisters: Lorene Abbott, Evelyn Wills, Mary Peden, and Betty Ann Edwards; and nephew: Byron Peden.

A Memorial service will be held on Sunday, September 22, 2019 at 2:00 pm at the Church of God in Kermit.

Cloyd Dee Smith, age 93, passed away September 4, 2019, in Jal, New Mexico.  He was born May 25, 1926 to Cloyd D. and Lula Belle (Jay) Smith in Petersburg, Texas. He married Irene Grace Wilson Smith on June 16, 1973 and they shared 46 wonderful years together.

C D was a member of the First Baptist Church in Jal, NM. He was a hard working man who will be dearly missed.

C D is preceded in death by his parents: Cloyd and Lula Smith; his wife; Irene Smith; and his sister: Alice Morgan.

He is survived by his son: Donnie Smith and wife Lavena of Jal, NM; step-son: John Wilson and wife Rachel of Aztec, NM; daughter: Joyce Pittam and Husband Rick of Jal, NM; grandchildren: Curt Pittam, Tracy Baten, Jeannie Terry, Desiree Lopez, Tasha Earl, Brittany Wilson, and Cree Gurley; and 13 great-grandchildren.

Graveside services will be held at 2:00 pm on Saturday, September 7, 2019 at Jal Cemetery in Jal, NM with Pastor Jody O’Briant officiating.

Bobby "Bob" George Parker

Bobby "Bob" George Parker, age 84, of Kermit, TX, passed from this life on Monday, September 8, 2019.  He was born in Goldthwaite, TX on September 24, 1934 to Pat and Velma (Denman) Parker.  He married Dorothy Jean Williams in Mullin, TX on August 18, 1956 and they shared 63 wonderful years together.

Bob was a member of the First United Methodist Church in Kermit. He was enlisted in the Army until 1963. He enjoyed farming and auto parts. Bob was passionate about his Dallas Cowboys and his cats. He loved his family and his grandchildren. Bob will be dearly missed.

He is survived by his wife: Dorothy Parker of Kermit, TX; daughter: Donna Barker and husband Doyle of Abilene, TX; grandchildren: Lexie Barker and fiancÚ Sean Foley of Midland, TX and Reid Barker of Lubbock, TX; and grand-dog: Miller.

He was preceded in death by his parents: Pat and Velma Parker; and brother: Bill Parker.

Family visitation will be held at Family Services Funeral Parlor in Kermit, TX from 6:00 pm – 8:00 pm on Tuesday, September 10. 2019. Funeral services will be held in Goldthwaite, TX on Thursday, September 12, 2019, at 2:00 pm at Stacy-Wilkins Funeral Home.
