Debra Hopkins
Debra Kay Hopkins

Debra Kay Hopkins, age 58, of Kermit, went to be with her Lord and Savior on Tuesday,  April 21, 2015 at her home. She was born on May 9, 1956 in Delhi, LA to Leonard and Geneva (Dison) Shropshire.

Debra was a loving mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother. She loved cheering her grandkids on at various games.  Debra enjoyed fishing and had a passion for collecting brass figurines and dolphins.  She was called Nana by her grandkids.

She is survived by her son:  Gary Harris II and wife Stacy of Corpus Christi; two daughters:  Selinia Harris Gonzales of Kermit and Tiffany Urbina and husband Ricardo of Gardendale; two brothers: Billy Shropshire and wife Lori of Poteau, OK and Melvin Shropshire and wife Mary of Gardendale; one sister: Michelle Ladon Ellison of Odessa; eight grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.

She is preceded in death by her husband:  Melvin Lee "Big Moe" Hopkins Sr.; parents: Leonard and Geneva Shropshire; two sisters:  Mary Turnage and Kathy Shropshire; and her brother: Brandon Ellison.

Graveside Memorial Services will be held at 10:00 am, Tuesday, April 28, 2015 at the Kermit Cemetery in Kermit, TX  with Glenda Mixon officiating.  Arrangements are entrusted to Family Services Funeral Parlor.

Bill and Betty Hestand
Bill and Bettie Hestand

Join us in a “Celebration of Resurrection” memorial service for William “Bill” and Bettie Hestand at the First United Methodist Church on Monday, May 4th at 10:00 am.  This will be followed by an inurnment at the Kermit Cemetery with military honors.

Bill passed through the gates of heaven on April 14th, 2014 and was joined by his wife Bettie on September 14th, 2014.  Bill and Bettie moved to Kermit after retiring from the U.S. Air Force in 1972. Here they became staples of the community being very active in numerous organizations.  As members of the Zion Lutheran and later the First United Methodist Church they touched and influenced many lives in Kermit.  They actively supported the Men’s and Women’s Methodist Groups, Kermit Masonic Lodge #1258, VFW Post 6284, American Legion Post 339, Kermit Downtown Lions Club, and many Kermit activities. Although moving to New Mexico in 2010 for health reasons, their thoughts and hearts were always in Kermit.

Please join the family and friends to celebrate their lives and friendships at the First United Methodist Church at 10:00 am on Monday May 4, 2015.

William C Koopman
William Columbus (Tra) Koopman III

William Columbus (Tra) Koopman III, age 36, passed from this life on Friday, May 1, 2015 at Winkler County Memorial Hospital in Kermit, TX. He was born on Saturday, July 8, 1978 in Bryan, TX to William Columbus Koopman, Jr. and Tamzie Fayne (Ayers) Koopman.  

Tra was a giving person with a huge heart. He would give the shirt off his back to anyone in need. During Tra’s childhood he became involved in Boy Scouts and his dedication led him to receiving the highest award as an Eagle Scout. Tra worked as a security guard for Son Edison and during his free time enjoyed playing cards, staying active in Boy Scouts and spending time with family.  Family was extremely important to Tra. He will be missed dearly by all who knew and loved him.  

Those left to cherish his memory include his brother: Arthur Elexander Koopman and wife Sunny of Amarillo, TX; his very special niece: Athena Koopman of Amarillo TX; and his aunt: Diania McElvany and husband Robert of Grandbury, TX. 

Those preceding him in death are his parents: William Columbus Koopman, Jr. and Tamzie Fayne (Ayers) Koopman. 

Memorial services will be announced at a later date.  Arrangements are entrusted to Family Services Funeral Parlor.

Thomas Gonzales III
Thomas (Third) Gonzales III

Thomas (Third) Gonzales III, age 35, went to be with his heavenly father on May 3, 2015. He was born December 22, 1979 in Georgetown, TX to Thomas Gonzales Jr. and Velma (Villa) Gonzales.  He married the love of his life, Chastity Lynn (McLean) Gonzales on June 16, 2013 in Wink, TX. 

Third graduated from Wink High School in Wink, TX with the Class of 1998. He worked as a driller for Savanna Drilling in Odessa, TX and truly enjoyed his job.  Third was a wonderful man with a huge heart who loved helping others. He was a big fan of the Longhorns , New England Patriots and collected Nascar memorabilia. Third enjoyed working on anything with a motor but his passion was with woodworking . Third was the owner of  2 T's Woodworking in Wink, TX. He loved to fish and take special vacations with his family. He enjoyed cooking but Banana Pudding and Cheesecake were two of his favorite dishes.  Most of all, Third loved his family. He was a devoted husband, father, son, brother, uncle and a true friend. He will be missed dearly by all who knew him and his memory will live on. 

Those left to cherish his memory include his wife: Chastity Lynn Gonzales of Wink; one son: Thomas Gonzales IV of Wink, four daughters: Savannah McGill of Kermit, Madison Bordayo of Wink, Maygen Gonzales of Wickett and Cielbi Clark of Odessa; parents: Thomas Gonzales Jr. of Laredo, TX and Velma Gonzales of Wink; one brother: Tim Gonzales of Wink; two sisters: Sharon Gonzales of Wink and Amanda Fincher of Odessa; nieces: Mayley Baggett and husband Cody, Kortnie Gonzales, Heaven Alvarado, Taelor Warner; nephews: Daniel Zipfel and wife Keysha, Ryan Zipfel, Chris Warner and wife Nora, Matt Warner and Tyler Fincher; great niece: Kaidence Baggett and great nephew: Braesen Baggett; two grandsons: Mason Thomas and JoJo Hernandez; numerous aunts, uncles and a host of friends. 

He is reunited in Heaven with his paternal grandparents: Thomas Gonzales Sr. and Frances Gonzales and maternal grandparents: Santos Villa and Manuela Villa.  

Family visitation is scheduled for 6:00 pm to 8:00 pm on Friday, May 8, 2015 at Family Services Funeral Parlor in Kermit, TX. Funeral services are scheduled for 10:00 am, Saturday, May 9, 2015 at Wink High School Auditorium in Wink, TX with Brother Joe Mohler officiating. Third will be laid to rest at Kermit Cemetery directly following services. Arrangements are entrusted to Family Services Funeral Parlor of Kermit.

Melvin Edward "Eddie" Jennings Jr.

Melvin Edward "Eddie" Jennings Jr.,  age 62, of Kermit, TX passed away Sunday, May 3, 2015 at his residence in Kermit, TX. He was born January 28, 1953 in Midland, TX to Melvin and Joe Evelyn (Steakley) Jennings.   Eddie married Judy Holubec on June 8, 1974 in Rowena, TX and they celebrated 40 years together.

A memorial service will be held 2:00 pm, Saturday May 9, 2015 at the First Baptist Church in Kermit with Brother Dudley Mullins officiating.

Luther Smith
Luther Smith

Luther Smith,  age 89, of Kermit, TX passed away Monday, May 4, 2015 at Medical Center Hospital in Odessa, TX. He was born July 25, 1925 in George County, Mississippi to Andrew Washington and Willie Mae (Fenley) Smith.  He married the love of his life, Martha Creel, on May 10, 1953 in George County, Mississippi and they recently celebrated 61  years together.

Luther is survived by his wife:  Martha B. Smith; three sons:  Rodger Smith and wife Martha of Odessa, TX, David Smith of Kermit, TX, and Bobby Smith and wife Shelly of Moulton, AL; two daughters:  Dimple Kennedy of Wink, TX, and Charlotte Fletcher of Littlefield, TX; seven grandchildren; and numerous great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents:  Andrew and Willie Mae Smith; and daughter Janet Beasley.

A private memorial service will be held at a later date.  Arrangements are entrusted to Family Services Funeral Parlor of Kermit.

Melvin Hopkins Jr.

Melvin Lee Hopkins Jr.

Melvin Lee Hopkins Jr.,  age 53, a long time resident of Kermit, passed away Tuesday, May 5, 2015 at Covenant Medical Center Hospital in Lubbock, TX. He was born October 12, 1961 in Kermit to Melvin "Big Moe"  Sr. and Maudine Hopkins. 

Melvin was a man who enjoyed playing pool, camping and fishing.  He had a deep love for all kinds of music and was good mechanic.  He greatly loved spending time with his family.  Melvin was known by everyone as "Little Moe" or "Moe". 

"Little Moe"  is survived by two sons:  Joseph Lee Hopkins  and wife Kathryn of Sonora, and Joshua Lynn Hopkins and wife Acy of Wall, TX; sister:  Kathy Haston and boyfriend Howard Lee Bowen Jr. of Kermit; girlfriend:  Maria Mireles and her children John and Ricky; six grandchildren; nieces: Kat Howard and Tiffany Urbina; great-nieces and nephews:  Ricky, Carter, Anabella, and Ricky; and his special pet dog: Junior. 

He was preceded in death by his parents:  Melvin "Big Moe" and Maudine Hopkins and his Step-Mom: Debra Hopkins. 

A Graveside Memorial Service will be held 2:00 pm, Tuesday, May 19, 2015 at the Kermit Cemetery with Glenda Mixon officiating.  Arrangements are entrusted to Family Services Funeral Parlor of Kermit. 

Darryl Sonnier
Darryl Wayne Sonnier

Darryl Wayne Sonnier, age 59, of Kermit, TX passed away Tuesday, May 12, 2015 at Medical Center Hospital in Odessa, TX.  He was born July 13, 1955 in Eunice, Louisiana to Hilary D. Sonnier and Irene (Reed).  Darryl married Sandra (Fruge) Sonnier on June 1, 1975 in Eunice, Louisiana. They celebrated a loving thirty-nine years together.

Darryl was a Drilling Consultant in the Oil and Gas industry.  He was known as a hard-working man, who enjoyed doing yard work and tending to his trees.  Darryl adored his grandkids and loved spending time with his family.  His favorite pastime was fishing.  Darryl’s special pets were Sadie Girl and Sam.

Those left to cherish his memory are his wife Sandra Sonnier of Kermit, TX; his son: Shannon Sonnier and wife Melissa of Kermit, TX; his daughter: Jamie Dunlap and husband Billy of Kermit, TX; two sisters: Reba Fertitta and husband Patrick of Lake George, Colorado, and Becky Valerio and husband Tony of El Paso, TX; and seven grandchildren: Zach Rhymes, Jordan Sonnier, Jayce Sonnier, Lexie Sonnier, Braden Dunlap, Conner Dunlap, and Myla Sonnier.

Darryl is preceded in death by his parents.

A Rosary will be held Thursday, May 14, 2015 at Family Services Funeral Chapel starting at 7:00 pm.  Funeral Services will be held at 2:00 PM, Friday, May 15, 2015 at the Family Services Funeral Chapel in Kermit, TX with Jimmy Braswell officiating.  Darryl will be laid to rest at the Kermit Cemetery in Kermit, TX following Services.  Pallbearers will include: Shannon Sonnier, Billy Dunlap, Jordan Sonnier, Zach Rhymes, Jayce Sonnier, and James Thibodeaux.  Honorary Pallbearers include: Patrick Fertitta, Braden Dunlap, Conner Dunlap, Lexie Sonnier, and Myla Sonnier.  Arrangements are entrusted to Family Services Funeral Parlor.

DONNA BLAND
Donna Angeline (Lucido) Bland

Donna Angeline (Lucido) Bland, 71, passed away on Friday, May 15, 2015 at her home in Kermit, TX. She was born on December 1, 1943 in Doniphan, MO to Dr. Joseph and Ines (Hilliard) Lucido. Donna was an active member of the Catholic Church. She is survived by her three children: Mary Clare Bland of Madrid, Spain; Catherine Wolfers and husband Kenton of Corte Madera, CA and Mick Bland of Denver, CO; her brother Reverend John Lucido of Kermit, TX; her ex-husband Michael Paul Bland of St. Louis, MO and two grandchildren: Ruby and Raney Wolfers.

She lived much of her life in St. Louis, MO.  Upon graduating from St. Joseph’s Academy in 1961, she went to Washington, D.C. where she attended Trinity College. She graduated with a Bachelor of Arts in Physics in 1965, then returned to St. Louis where she worked at McDonnell Aircraft from 1965-1968. Donna was always very interested in astronomy, and followed the U.S. Space Program very closely until the mid-1980’s. She loved music. She played the guitar, sang in the church choir for many years, and sang with the Saint Louis Symphony Chorus in the late 1980’s.

In 2002 Donna moved to Kermit, TX, to be closer to her brother, Reverend John Lucido. She was an Admissions Clerk at Winkler Memorial Hospital until her retirement last year, and an active member of St. Joseph-St. Thomas Parish.  Donna spent much of her time taking in, and caring for, homeless animals, particularly cats. She is survived by many of them that were very dear to her.

There will be a Memorial Mass held for her Thursday, May 21, 2015 from 7:00-7:30 pm at St. Joseph’s Church in Kermit, TX. There will be private Memorial Services held for her at a later date in St. Louis, MO and in Doniphan, MO. Her ashes will be buried on the grave of her parents in Doniphan, MO, according to her final wishes.

In lieu of flowers, her family asks that donations be made to a charity of choice.

James Diller
James E. (Jim) Diller

James E. (Jim) Diller, age 75, of Kermit passed away on May 26, 2015 at the ContinueCARE Hospital in Midland, TX.  He was born August 30, 1939, in Kermit, TX to Harold Diller and Dolly Faye (Lightfoot) Diller Mack.  Jim married Linnie Blankenship on February 24, 1986 in Ft. Davis and they celebrated 29 years together.  Jim was a man who loved to travel the country in his R.V. and go fishing.  He was known to be a big Dallas Cowboy fan.

 

Jim is survived by his wife: Linnie Diller of Kermit, TX; 3 children: Staci (Diller) Wade and husband Toby of San Marcos, TX; Danny Diller and wife Katrina of Castroville, TX; and Shane Diller of Midland, TX; step-daughter: Sherri Buckliew of Kermit, TX; 13 grandchildren and 4 great-grandchildren.

 

He was preceded in death by his parents. 

Funeral services will be 2:30 pm, Friday, May 29, 2015 at the First Baptist Church in Kermit with Rev. Dudley Mullins and Rev. Charles Martin officiating.  Interment with military honors will follow at Kermit Cemetery.  Pallbearers will include: Dakota Diller, Dalton Wade, Marco Gutierrez, Micheal Beard, Toby Wade, Danny Diller and Marshall Buckliew.  Honorary pallbearers will include:  Jerry Newnham, Jack McComb, Joe Rowe, Joe Roberts, Bobby Leeson, and Jerry Phillips.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the American Cancer Society or St. Jude’s Hospital.

Johnny Wagner
John Leslie "Johnny" Wagner

John Leslie Wagner, age 53, passed away on May 27, 2015 at his residence in Kermit, TX.  He was born on October 5, 1961 in Oak Grove, LA to L.E. Wagner and Dorothy Dean (Sims) Morgan. 

 

Johnny, as he was known to his friends and family, was an outdoorsman who enjoyed hunting, fishing and loved riding horses. He was a hard working man and was very skilled at welding. A jack of all trades, he was great at everything he did. Johnny had a big heart and always helped  others.  He never met a stranger and would open his home to anyone in need.  His children found him full of wisdom and he often gave advice to those in need. He was a peacemaker who loved seeing others happy and was a jokester. He had a love for music and passed this on to his children. Family was extremely important to Johnny.  His kids and grandchildren were loved dearly, including his beloved dog Lucy whom he thought of as his kid. Johnny was very proud of his children's accomplishments in life and loved to brag about them to everyone. Johnny will be truly missed  by his family and many, many dear friends who meant the world to him.

 

Johnny is survived by his son:  Mat Wagner and wife Tiffany of Kermit; two daughters:  Michelle Hardaway and husband Hunter of Kermit, Magen Wagner and fiance Eloy Perez of San Angelo; mother: Dorothy Morgan and husband Terry of Grenada, Miss; sister: Tina Crull and husband Putt of Grenada, Miss; 5 grandchildren:  Aiden Pargas, Scarlet Perez, Hadley Hardaway, Delilah Hardaway, and Jaxon Wagner; uncles: Don Sims, Doug Sims, Larry Sims and George Sims; aunt: Debbie Calhoun; and many nieces and nephews.

 

He was preceded in death by his father:  L.E. Wagner and his beloved Lucy.

A family visitation will be held from 6:00 pm to 8:00 pm on Monday, June 1, 2015 at Family Services Funeral Parlor. Funeral services will be 2:00 pm, Tuesday, June 2, 2015 at the First United Methodist Church in Kermit with Brother James Cotton officiating.  Interment will follow at Kermit Cemetery.  Pallbearers will include: Ricochet Collier, Mark Coburn, Chris Haley, Scott Williams, Stan Gregory, David (Nascar) Greathouse, Gary Marshall and Mickey Barron .  Honorary pallbearers will include Mike Glander, Ross Barron, Michael Barron, Shane Barron and Jonny Mendoza.

James Mike Denny
James Michael “Mike” Denny

James Michael “Mike” Denny, age 66, of Kermit passed away on May 29, 2015 at his residence in Kermit, TX.  He was born April 16, 1949 in Monahans, TX to James Cannon Denny and Margaret Mae (Byrom) Denny.  He was known to everyone as Mike.  Mike loved to watch Western and military movies.  He enjoyed going fishing and spending time with his family. 

 

Mike is survived by his son: Clay Denny of Rockledge, FL; his daughter: Jeana Espinoza and husband Joe of Burleson, TX; his sister Marsha Hill and husband James of Kermit, TX; three grandchildren: Kristina Espinoza, Mia Espinoza, and Sebastian Espinoza.

 

He was preceded in death by his parents and his brother Pat Denny. 

Graveside services will be 10:00 am, Wednesday, June 3, 2015 at the Kermit Cemetery officiated by Brother Alan Speed.  Honorary pallbearers will include: Zach Hill, James Hill, Zach Denny, and Sebastian Espinoza Arrangements are entrusted to Family Services Funeral Parlor of Kermit.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to Alcoholics Anonymous.

Martin G Lujan Sr
Martin Guardiola Lujan Sr.

Martin Guardiola Lujan Sr., age 80, of Kermit, passed away Saturday, June 6, 2015 in Alpine, Texas. He was born January 30, 1935 in Ojinaga, Mexico to Pedro and Conrada (Lujan) Guardiola.  

Martin was a playful man who was always happy. He had a deep love for his family and really enjoyed family reunions. He loved music and playing the saxophone. He was of the Catholic faith. 

Martin is survived by his three sons: Martin Guardiola Rios Jr. and his wife Noemy of Odessa, TX; Eddie Guardiola Rios and his wife Nora of Kermit, TX and Antonio Guardiola of Dallas, TX; two daughters: Arcilia Hernandez and husband Jose Angel of Kermit, TX and Arcelia Vasquez and husband Ricardo Amaro of Kermit, TX; twenty one grandchildren; numerous great grandchildren, numerous aunts, uncles, cousins, nieces and nephews. 

He is preceded in death by his daughter: Elda Quiroz; his first wife: Concepcion Guardiola, two sisters: Manuela Guardiola Baeza and Consuelo Guardiola Luna. 

A rosary will be held 7:00 pm, Tuesday, June 9, 2015 at Family Services Funeral Parlor. A Mass of Christian Burial is scheduled for 10:00 am, Wednesday, June 10, 2015 at St. Joseph Catholic Church in Kermit with Father Rudy Lacerna officiating.  Pallbearers will include: Martin Guardiola Rios, Eddie Guardiola Rios, Antonio Guardiola Rios, Cowboy Hernandez, Jorge Vasquez, Hugo Vasquez, Antonio Guardiola Jr., Aron Quiroz, Octavio Quiroz and Anibal Hernandez. Honorary Pallbearer will include: Hilario Hernandez.  Interment will follow at Kermit Cemetery. Arrangements were entrusted to Family Services Funeral Parlor.
