Daniel Castillo Jr.

Daniel Castillo Jr., age 65 of Kermit, died on Saturday, March 29, 2014 at Winkler County Memorial Hospital. He was born on September 14, 1948 in Pecos, TX to Daniel Castillo Sr. and Maria (Melendez) Cantu. He was a Licensed Vocational Nurse before retiring. 

Survivors include his mother: Maria Cantu of Kermit; two brothers: James Melendez of Arlington, TX and Joe Melendez and wife Christy of Kermit; two sisters: Jesusita Lopez and husband Epifanio of Jal, NM and Consuelo (Connie) Marquez of Rosamond, CA and one special cousin: Amparo  Prieto of Kermit. 

Per Daniel’s wishes, no services were held. Arrangements are entrusted to Family Services Funeral Parlor.

J R Smith
James Raymon Smith

James Raymon Smith, age 81, of Kermit passed from this life on Sunday, April 6, 2014.  He was born to Vernie Hoops and Will Smith on November 26th 1932.  He was one of seven children. He was only afforded a third grade education, but he later taught himself to read and write.

James married the love of his life Floretta Wilson Smith in Evansville, IN on February 24th 1951.  They soon had 6 children and countless animals to look after.  When James wasn't busy spending time with his wife and children he enjoyed watching Sulky Horse racing down at the local track.  On the rare night James and Flo weren't working overtime or helping the kiddos with homework they participated on the local bowling team. While in Indiana, James worked at the Whirlpool factory on the assembly line.  In the early 1970's the Smith's moved to Winkler County chasing the oil boom.  James worked for various oil field companies and went on to open his own starter and alternator repair business. James and his wife were active members of the First Baptist Church in Wink. After retiring if James wasn't running his grand kids around, he was in the garden. He had a knack for growing delicious tomatoes and squash, he loved sharing him home grown vegetables with everyone.  James enjoyed taking his grandkids back to Indiana to visit family for summer vacations, stopping at every McDonalds along the way.  He also enjoyed a lazy day at Jal Lake trying to keep bait on his grand kids hooks. At night you would always see James in his recliner reading the Bible and drinking just one more cup of coffee. He was a devoted family man and will be missed by many. 

James is survived by two sisters Ann and Sue of Kentucky, son Jimmy and his wife Joyce Smith of Evansville, IN, son Danny Smith of Haskell, TX, daughter RosaLee Smith of Kermit, TX, son Brian Smith of Kermit, TX and daughter Jan Burrows and her husband Val Jo of Oregon; 11 grandchildren: James and wife Mary Smith, Jason Smith, Tracy and Husband Dennis Moore, Jeremy and wife Donna Smith, Glen Smith, Danny Smith Jr., Crystal Hendricks, Bobbie Jean Kuhr, Joshua Smith, Stephanie Udy and Husband Clif, and Larry Burrows and 14 great grandchildren : Lilly Smith, Tyler Smith, Brandi Smith, Maranda Moore, Kyle Smith, Wyatt Smith, Brooklyn Smith, Trace Andrews, Jacob Andrews, Mika Goody, Mariah Robertson and Dylan Robertson;  Sadie Kay Udy and baby Udy on the way.  

He was preceeded in death by: His parents Vernie Hoops and Will Smith, bothers Carl and Fred, sisters Beulah and Clarice, his loving wife Floretta Smith, one son David Smith and one granddaughter: Keeli Rai Goody. 

Memorial Services will be privately held at a later date.

In lieu of flowers please make a donation to the West Texas Food Bank, James never wanted anyone to go hungry.

Peter Anthony Petix

Peter Anthony Petix, age 55, of Prescott, AZ passed from this life on Wednesday, April 16, 2014 in Prescott, AZ.  He was born to Santo and Barbara June (Broome) Petix on May 18, 1958 in New York City, NY. 

Pete, as he was known to his many friends, was a very talented man.  He inherited a love for working with his hands from his father and had an uncanny knack for fixing almost anything. He enjoyed spending time outdoors and could often be found fly fishing, deep sea fishing, hunting and camping. He owned his own business managing FedEx routes in the Prescott, AZ community. He had a love for music and could sing and play the guitar.  He will be greatly missed by all who loved him. 

Peter is survived by his mother:  Barbara June (Broome) White of Eastland, TX; two sisters: Linda Ann Petix-Sarandrea of Houston, TX and Patricia Lynn Petix-Shanks of Jal, NM; wife: Dorothy Rae Barnick-Petix and step-daughter: Jamie Rae Decker-Petix of Prescott, AZ; two nephews: Jason Nichols and Rodney Shanks and a host of friends and extended family.  

He was preceded in death by his father: Santo Anthony Petix and step-father: Calvin White.  

A graveside memorial service will be held at 2 pm MST, Saturday, June 7, 2014 at the Jal Cemetery in Jal, NM with Ron Vaughn officiating.

Zenaida Saenz Saucedo

Zenaida Saenz Saucedo, of Kermit, age 83, passed from this life on Friday, April 18, 2014 in Kermit, TX surrounded by loved ones. She was born on March 2, 1931 in El Mulato, MX to Gabriel and Victoria (Juarez) Saenz.

She was a member of the Catholic Church, as well as a member of De Colores and the Choir. She was a very family oriented woman, who treasured family gatherings and events. She loved to dance and sing and was always an upbeat and happy person.

Those left to cherish her memory include her husband: Juan Saucedo of Kermit, TX; five sons: Luis Armando Saucedo of Midland, TX,  Santos Saucedo of Kermit, TX, Erbey Saucedo of Kermit, TX, Jose Adan Saucedo of Andrews, TX and Ruben Saucedo of Odessa, TX; three daughters: Monica S. Madrid of Kermit, TX, Gregoria S. Porras of Kermit, TX and Dora S. Juarez of Andrews, TX; one brother: Jose Saenz of Ojinaga, MX; one sister: Ester Grado of Eunice, NM; 32 grandchildren and 26 great-grandchildren.

She is preceded in death by one son: Juan Saucedo Jr.; her parents: Gabriel and Victoria Saenz; six sisters: Manuela, Sabina, Secundina, Mercedes, Elvira and Monica; and two brothers: Gabriel and Lewis.

The Rosaries will be said at 7:00 pm, Sunday, April 20 and 7:00 pm, Monday, April 21, 2014 at Family Services Funeral Parlor. Mass of Christian Burial will be 11:00 am, Tuesday, April 22, 2014 at St. Joseph Catholic Church with Father John Lucido officiating. Interment will follow at Kermit Cemetery.  Pallbearers include: Luis Saucedo Jr., Victor Saucedo, Andres Madrid, Miguel Porras, Erbey Saucedo Jr., Jose Saucedo Jr., Federico Juarez Jr. and Yanira Saucedo.  Arrangements are entrusted to Family Services Funeral Parlor.

Rebah Lee Peterson

Rebah Lee Peterson, age 79, passed from this life on Tuesday, April 29, 2014 in Midland, TX. She was born in Iowa Park,TX on January 23, 1935 to Philip and Faye (Campbelle) Henderson. She was a member of the Westside Church of Christ.

She was preceded in death by her husband: Walter Peterson, one son: Walter, and her parents: Philip and Faye Henderson.

Graveside Services will be held at 2:00 pm, Friday, May 2, 2014 at Kermit Cemetery in Kermit, TX with Brother Mike Vestal officiating.  Arrangements are entrusted to Family Services Funeral Parlor.

Don L Michel
Donald Lee “Don” Michel

Donald Lee “Don” Michel, age 77, went to be with his heavenly Father, surrounded by loved ones, on Friday, May 9, 2014 at Midland Memorial Hospital. He was born on May 15, 1936 in Garden City, KS to the late William Michel and Elsie (McCarter) Michel. He married Paula Diane Michel on November 13, 1983 in Kermit, TX. Don proudly served his country in the United States Army.  His rapport with people and his reputation served him well as he owned and operated Michel Real Estate in Kermit for many years, before retiring and turning the business over to his son.  

An outdoorsman, he enjoyed hiking and backpacking.  Don was a crafty man who had a passion for building things.  He enjoyed remodeling houses in his spare time and built things for his grandchildren – everything from rocking horses and trucks to a three bedroom tree house with a zip line. He was a jack of all trades and a master composter. Very active in his community, Don was known for his enormous personality, friendly smile, and wealth of selflessness.  Don was a wonderful, hard working man who loved his family dearly. He was a great husband, father, brother and granddad. Donald was a special man who touched many lives during his time on earth and his memory will live on in their hearts.  

Those left to cherish his memory include his wife: Paula Michel of Kermit, TX; his five children: Jack Duff Michel and wife Sheila and their children: Allison Marie Michel  and Jantzen Donald Michel, all of Kermit, TX; Tracy Leigh Michel Whitfield and husband Brett and their children: Ross Alan Whitfield and Blaine Garrett Whitfield, all of Seminole, TX: Dan Michel and wife Mendy and their children: Preston James Michel and Joseph Price Michel, all of Midland, TX: Andrea Nicole Helmer and husband Grant and their children: Halen Faith Helmer, Wyatt Cade Helmer, Tatum Sage Helmer, all of Haslet, TX; Daniel Jack Lowe and wife Michelle and their children: Jack Cooper Lowe and Luke Daniel Lowe all of Austin, TX;  one sister: Pauline Dater of Oklahoma City, OK;  numerous nieces, nephews and a host of wonderful friends.  

Those preceding him in death include his parents: William and Elsie Michel, his first wife Myra Michel, two brothers: William “Bill” Michel and Darrell Dean Michel and one sister: Roberta Shirkey.  

Public viewing will start at 2:00 pm on Sunday, May 11, 2014 at Family Services Funeral Parlor in Kermit. Funeral services are scheduled for 10:00 am, Wednesday, May 14, 2014 at the First United Methodist Church of Kermit with Rev. Dr. Ruth Fowler officiating and Rev. Beth Harrington assisting. Interment will follow at Kermit Cemetery.   Arrangements are entrusted to Family Services Funeral Parlor.

Regina Ann (Taylor) Mills

Regina Ann (Taylor) Mills, age 45, passed from this life on Friday, May 9, 2014 at her residence in Wink, TX. She was born on January 14, 1969 in Kermit, TX to Larry Lynn Mills and Barbara (Taylor) Alexander. She worked as a caretaker and had a passion for helping others. 

Regina was a friendly, loving young woman who enjoyed helping others. She loved her two rat terriers “Noah” and “Rhonda” dearly and would often do without to make sure her babies were cared for. She would give the shirt off her back to those in need. Regina cherished her family and will be missed by all who knew and loved her.

Those left to cherish her memory include her mother: Barbara Alexander and husband Ronnie of Kermit; father: Larry Mills and wife Wanda of Palestine, TX; three brothers: Kirk Taylor and wife Jeanne of Snyder, TX, Ronnie Alexander Jr. of Kermit and Adam Alexander of Midland, TX; one sister: Amanda Lockwood and husband Larry of Kermit; her babies: “Noah” and “Rhonda”; and numerous nieces, nephews and a host of friends. 

Memorial services are scheduled for 4:00 pm on Saturday, May 17, 2014 at Family Services Funeral Parlor with her brother Kirk Taylor officiating. Arrangements are entrusted to Family Services Funeral Parlor. 

Wilburn Donald Pirtle Jr.

Wilburn Donald Pirtle Jr., age 61, passed from this life on Monday, May 12, 2014 in Kermit, TX. He was born on November 29, 1952 in Chelsea, MA. to Wilburn Donald and Mary (Gallagher) Pirtle.  

Donald was a big fan of science fiction, especially “Star Trek”. He enjoyed gardening, fishing, and reading readers digest. He had a passion for working in the oil field. Don was an ordained minister and was known by everyone as “Daddy Don”. 

Those left to cherish his memory include his son: Jason Dean Pirtle and wife Brandy of Purcell, OK; one daughter: Donnetta S. Pirtle and spouse Jessika Engle of Wink, TX; three brothers: Andrew Davis of Sherman, TX, James Pirtle and wife Lori of Hiram, TX, and Johnny Pirtle of OK; three sisters: Delina Fletcher and husband Clyde of Jal, NM, Marion Ramsey and husband Randy of Healdton, OK and Pauline Keyes of Lovington, NM; seven grandchildren: Trey Smith, Melissa Pirtle, Kimberley White, Alena Pirtle, Jaden Pirtle, Timber Pirtle and Natasha Engle. 

He is preceded in death by his wife: Shirley Pirtle; one brother: Leo Davis; Nephews: Ricky Burdett and Christopher Keys and his parents. 

Memorial services are scheduled for 4:00 pm on Friday, May 16, 2014 at Family Services Funeral Parlor with his son Jason Pirtle officiating. Arrangements are entrusted to Family Services Funeral Parlor.

Violet McGuire
Violet Aldene McGuire

On May 19, 2014, Violet Aldene Ford McGuire of Barnhart, TX, peacefully passed away.

Graveside funeral services will be held, 2:00 pm, Wednesday, May 21, 2014 at Kermit Cemetery in Kermit, TX with Chaplain William R. Blain of Grand Prairie, TX officiating.  Arrangements are with Family Services Funeral Parlor of Kermit, TX.

Aldene was born September 27, 1920 in Hope, NM to William C. and Mary Childress Ford.  She was born into a large family with seven brothers, six sisters and one half-sister.  Aldene was the last surviving member of her family of origin.

Aldene graduated from Kermit High School.On June 22, 1940, she married Conley Edward McGuire Jr. in Seminole, TX and they celebrated 50 years together before his death in 1990.  She was a long time member of Vine Avenue Baptist Church in Odessa, TX.  She was a homemaker with abundant talents, including quilting, sewing, crocheting, and knitting.

Survivors include her son: E. Alan McGuire and his wife Beverly of Barnhart, TX; one daughter: Priscilla A. Taylor of Iowa Park, TX; five grandchildren:  Tangela Blain, Tonya Stalcup, Terry Pustujovsky, Tracy Van Winkle, and Bryan Taylor; eight great-grandchildren, one great-great-grandchild, and several special nieces and nephews.

The family would like to send a special “Thank you” to the Reagan County Care Center nurses and staff, Hospice of San Angelo and especially Vickie and Anna.

John S. “Jack” Healy

John S. “Jack” Healy of Kermit passed away Tuesday, May 20th at the Winkler County Memorial Hospital.

He was born February 3, 1930 in Duncan, OK. He was retired from the Heating and Cooling business. Jack served in the U.S. Navy on board the USS Buck as a Gunners Mate from 1948-1952. He was most proud of serving his country and participating in Veteran activities. The family best remembers him for his quick witted sense of humor, artistic ability and most of all the love and passion he had for them.

He is preceded in death by his parents: Harriett and R.T. Healy and sister: Patsy Hunt of OK.

He is survived by his wife of 62 years: Virginia Stephen Healy; his son: Ronald Healy of Kermit; his daughter: Daina Healy Lankford of Weatherford; and three granddaughters: Mackenzie, Bailey and Brett Lankford of Weatherford, TX and many other extended family and friends and his devoted French bulldog “DeeDee”.

The family wishes to express a special thanks to his devoted caretakers, Raul Balderrama and Yolanda and to the extraordinary care from the nurses at the Winkler County Hospital.

Memorial services will be 5:00 pm Friday, May 23, 2014, at Family Services Funeral Chapel in Kermit, Texas, officiated by Brother Dudley Mullins.  Arrangements are entrusted to Family Services Funeral Parlor.

Antonia S.  “Tonie” (Alvarez) Fernandez

Antonia S.  “Tonie” (Alvarez) Fernandez, of Kermit, age 99, passed from this life on Wednesday, May 21, 2014 in Odessa, TX. She was born on October 13, 1914 in Marfa, TX to Victor and Catarina (Orona) Alvarez. She was of the Catholic faith.

Antonia loved working in her yard, driving the lawn mower and dancing. She also enjoyed going to estate sales and collected blue willow china, jewelry and dolls.

Those left to cherish her memory include one son: Joe Toby Selman and wife Luz of Kermit, TX; one brother: Miguel Alvarez of El Paso, TX; one  sister: Lucy Ramirez of El Paso, TX; four grandchildren: Kathryn Barriga and husband Ramon of Kermit, TX, Rosa Mary Cabezuela and husband Manuel of Monahans, TX, Elizabeth Acosta and husband Hector of Tucson, AZ and John Selman and wife Mirna of  Kodiac, AK; nine great-grandchildren: Samuel Barriga, Joann Barriga, Adriana Cabezuela, Sergio Cabezuela, Enriko Cabezuela, Ricardo Acosta, Cesar Acosta, John Michael Selman and Jazlyn Selman; and four great-great grandchildren: Anisa Cabezuela, Alana Salazar, Angelina Luz Selman and Anais Carrasco.

She is preceded in death by her husbands: Toby Selman and Cesar Fernandez; her parents: Victor and Catarina Alvarez; three brothers: Victor, Jose and Daniel Alvarez; and three sisters: Carmen, Manuelita and Martha.

A Rosary will be said at 7:00 pm, Sunday, May 25, 2014 at Family Services Funeral Parlor. Mass of Christian Burial will be 10:00 am, Monday, May 26, 2014 at St. Thomas Catholic Church with Father Molina officiating. Pallbearers include: Joann Barriga, Sergio Cabezuela, Enriko Cabezuela, Ricardo Acosta, Cesar Acosta and John M. Selman. Honorary Pallbearers include: Sam Barriga, Adriana Cabezuela and Jazlyn Selman. Interment will follow at Kermit Cemetery. Arrangements are entrusted to Family Services Funeral Parlor.

Jimmy Wayne Gladden

Jimmy Wayne Gladden, age 63, passed from this life on Friday, May 23, 2014 in Odessa, TX. He was born in Hobbs, NM on April 30, 1951 to Troy and Jerry (Jones) Gladden.

Jimmy was a little league coach who had a great love and passion for sports. His favorite teams were the “Houston Astros” and the “Texas Longhorns”. He also enjoyed car racing and bowling. He was active in his community and served on the Eunice City Council for 16 years.

Those left to cherish his memory include his wife: Joan Gladden of Eunice, NM; two sons: Randy Gladden and wife Natalie of Hobbs, NM; Jerad Gladden and wife Wendi of Eunice, NM; one daughter: Xan Hobbs and husband Billy of Eunice, NM; one sister-in-law: Paulie Gladden of Hobbs, NM; two sisters: Claudette Fried and husband Bob of Cromwell, CT and Paulette Rogers and husband Kenneth of Lubbock, TX; nine grandchildren: Justin, Ashley, Chelsea, Katlynn, Kyle, Brett, Makenzie, Faith, Payton and Hayden; three great-grandchildren: Jordyn, Oliver and Jonah and many special brothers and sisters-in-laws.

He was preceded in death by his parents: Troy and Jerry Gladden; one brother: Troy Gladden Jr.; nieces and nephews: Christi, Tim, Toby, Traci and Adrianne.

A service of remembrance celebrating Jimmy's life will be held at 10:00 am (MST), Tuesday, May 27, 2014 at First United Methodist Church in Eunice, NM with Pastor Mary Taken officiating.   In lieu of flowers donations may be made to the First United Methodist Church Youth Group.  Arrangements are entrusted to Family Services Funeral Parlor.
