E Wilhelm
Ernest L. Wilhelm

Ernest L. Wilhelm, 80, passed away on Sunday, June 16, 2013, in Baptist Memorials Nursing Home in San Angelo, Texas. Ernest was born on December 24, 1932, to Merrell and Lorene Wilhelm in Comanche, Texas, where he was raised on a farm and attended school. He married the love of his life, Rita, in Lovington, N.M. They celebrated 62 years of marriage this year. Ernest worked in the West Texas oilfields, South America and Algeria where he retired as a drilling superintendent from Parker Drilling in the international department.

Survivors include wife: Rita; sister: Irene Christianson of Colorado Springs, Colo.; brother: Tommy Wilhelm and wife Billy of Bowie; sons: Earnest Wilhelm and wife Charla of Longview; Terry and wife Glenda of Joshua; and daughters: Becky Covington and husband Jim of Sonora; Susan Bland and husband Benny of Greenwood. Also left to cherish his memory are his grandchildren: Kim Jones, Beth Donaldson, Adrian Templet, Megan Wilhelm, Cody Wilhelm, Rachel Bland, Brittney Bland; and seven great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents; son Stephen Wilhelm; two brothers; and two sisters.

Ernest loved life, cherished his family, was a devoted fan of the Dallas Cowboys and enjoyed his Western movies.

The family would also like to acknowledge the kind and caring staff at Baptist Memorials Nursing Home. Additional thanks to Odyssey Hospice of San Angelo.  

There will be a graveside Memorial Service 10 am, Saturday, July 20, 2013 at the Kermit Cemetery officiated by Brother Richard Ray.  Services are entrusted to Family Services Funeral Parlor. 

Calvin Levis Awbrey III

Calvin Levis Awbrey III, age 47, passed from this life on Thursday, July 18, 2013 in Kermit, TX.  He was born in Odessa, TX on April 7, 1966 to Calvin Levis Awbrey Jr. and wife Bonnie (Riggs) Awbrey Sullivan .


Levis was a wonderful man who loved kids. He was involved in coaching the youth in Kermit with his brother Brian for over 18 years. He was a huge football and basketball fan. Levis’s favorite football teams were the Kermit Yellow Jackets and of course the Cowboys. He also enjoyed watching the San Antonio Spurs and the Astros. Coaching and watching the kids play sports was something that enriched his life. He was a man of great integrity and well respected by all who knew him.


Those left to cherish his memory are his sons: Austin and Brayden Awbrey of Kermit, TX; one daughter: Ashley Awbrey of Kermit, TX; two brothers: Jimmy Awbrey and wife Ivonne of Wichita Falls, TX and Brian Awbrey and wife Claudia of Kermit, TX; nephews: Devin and Jayden Awbrey of Kermit, TX, Andrew and Matthew Awbrey of Wichita Falls, TX; nieces: Taylor and Maria Awbrey of Wichita Falls, TX and great niece: Daniela Awbrey of Kermit, TX.


He is preceded in death by his parents: Calvin Awbrey Jr. and Bonnie Lea Awbrey Sullivan; grandmother: Faye Lewis and grandparents: Calvin Levis Awbrey I and Faye Holland.


Funeral services will be held at 10:00 am Monday, July 22, 2013 at First Baptist Church of Kermit, TX officiated by James Cotton. Pallbearers will be Ozzie Lujan, Andy Williamson, Eric Spangler, Colby Owen, Mike Muniz, Mike Kilgore, Roy Richardson and Matt Creager. Honorary Pallbearers will be Matt Wagner, Hunter Hardaway, Rex Kilgore, Timmy Cravens, Jeff Mills, Steve Cook, Lance Casey, Mike Marshall, Chris Crawford, Mike Sweeten, Jason Hicks, Kevin Hicks, Rick Holly, Larry Nickens and Dewayne Forga. Interment will follow at Kermit Cemetery.  Arrangements are entrusted to Family Services Funeral Parlor.

“Red John” Hargett

“Red John” Hargett, age 56, passed from this life unexpectedly on Wednesday, July 17, 2013. He was born June 13, 1957 to Johnnie Lee Hargett, Sr. and Stella Mae (Minnie) in Williamsburg, OH. He was a truck driver for Rapid Transportation.  

“Red John” was a loving man who would give the shirt off his back to help someone in need. He was known to be a “Lady’s Man” and was known for his BIG heart and handsome red hair. “Red John” was a huge football fan and his favorite teams were the Dallas Cowboys, Texas Longhorns and Kansas City Chiefs. Anyone who knew “Red John” knew that if they ever needed someone, he would be there. “Red John” will truly be missed. 

Those left to cherish his memory include his wife: Letitia (Gillit) Hargett of Kermit, Texas and numerous friends.  

Preceding him in death are his parents: Johnnie Hargett Sr. and Stella Mae Hargett. 

A celebration of life will be held at 5:30 pm, Friday, July 26, 2013 at Poppy’s Place in Kermit. Honorary Pallbearers include: Alexander Pando, David Bailey, Gary Breeding, Bill Beaty, Robin and Roger Blankenship, Buddy Broome, Joe Mitchell, Pete and Rusty Pilkington, Benny McKee, Ricky McKee and Donny Hughes.

Stephen Anthony Everest

Stephen Anthony Everest, age 66, passed from this life on Saturday, July 27, 2013 in Andrews, TX. He was born May 23, 1947 in Artesia, NM to the late Edward Anthony Everest and Ann LaRue (Everett) Everest. He worked in retail sales and was the owner of Southwest Auto Supply.

Stephen was an all around great guy who loved the outdoors. Some of his favorite hobbies were bird watching, astronomy, fly fishing, golfing and reading.

Those left to cherish his memory inlcude his wife: Eulonda Everest of Kermit, TX; one son: Stephen Everest of Gypsum, CO; and three grandchildren: Bryce, Brooke Lyne and Brayden.

Preceding him in death are his parents: Edward and Ann Everest.

Memorial services will be privately held. In lieu of flowers, please make donations to the West Texas Boys Ranch located at 10223 Boys Ranch Rd. George Warren Merrell

George Warren Merrell, age 84 of Kermit, Texas, passed away August 8, 2013 at Monahans Health Care Center.

An only child, he was born on November 4, 1928, in Nogales, Arizona to Milton Flynn Merrell and Caroline Hermina Schovajsa. He retired from the Federal Aviation Administration on September 17, 1983 after 29 years of service. After retiring from the FAA he had an offer to be a weather observer at Winkler County Airport where he worked for 8 years. After retiring from that job he spent many happy hours in his shop.

As an early age George was a very inquisitive child wanting to know exactly how things worked and how to fix it if it didn’t work. As a result, he knew how to correctly fix anything. When he couldn’t find a screw or bolt that would fix the problem he proceeded to make one in his shop.

He attended schools in El Paso graduating High School in 1946. He attended Texas Western College until the Korean War interrupted his education. Knowing he was going to be drafted into the Army he chose to enlist in the US Navy instead on Nov. 7, 1950 serving aboard the USS Askari as an electronics technician until he was honorably discharged August 1, 1954.

After returning home he entered the University of Texas at Austin where he graduated on January 13, 1958 with a Bachelor of Science Degree in Electrical Engineering. After graduation he began working for the Federal Aviation Administration. He worked at Holloman Air Force base and White Sands Missile Range where he worked on the rocket propelled test sled and on planned missiles and rockets that had to do with space age technology which eventually sent men to the moon.

The program at White Sands Missile Range was abolished and he was transferred to the Winkler County Airport. He moved to Kermit in 1978 where he met Betty Mounce Titsworth and they were married on August 8, 1979 in Canton, Texas at the home of Betty’s niece, Shirley Hudson.

George was Methodist. He was a member of Winkler Trap and Gun Club where he enjoyed many hours of shooting at clay targets with fellow members. He was also an amateur ham radio operator with Amateur Radio license AC5WI. He enjoyed many hours of radio time talking to friends.

George is survived by his wife Betty, of Kermit; one son: Michael Keith Titsworth and wife Deanna of Wink; one grandson: Eric Allan Titsworth of Wink; one granddaughter: Haley Michelle Titsworth of San Antonio and sister-in-law: Ollie Davis of Canton, Texas.

Graveside Services will be 10:00 am Saturday, August 10, 2013 at the Kermit Cemetery in Kermit Texas. Services will be officiated by Dudley Mullins. Honorary Pallbearers will be: Michael Titsworth; Eric Titsworth; Haley Titsworth; Charlie Cooper; James Hill, Jace Fugua and Ricky Kidd.  Arrangements are entrusted to Family Services Funeral Parlor.

Alvaro Ramirez Olivas

Alvaro Ramirez Olivas, age 81, passed from this life on Wednesday, August 14, 2013 at a residence in Kermit, TX. He was born July 27, 1932 in Mulato, MX to Guadalupe and Angelita (Ramirez) Olivas. He was Catholic.

Alvaro, also known by his many friends as “Baro”, was a hard worker and loved being outdoors. He worked as a farmer and rancher for many years. Baro was a family man who enjoyed spending time with his grandkids. His warm heart, smile and presence will be deeply missed by those who loved him.

Those left to cherish his memory include his wife: Gregoria (Urquidi) Olivas of Kermit; three sons: Maurilio Olivas and wife Deborah Ramirez, Ranulfo Olivas and wife Avilia and Rocky Olivas, all of Kermit; three daughters: Anna Hernandez and husband Arnulfo of Eastland, TX, Maria E. Campos and husband Jose and Veronica Olivas, both of Kermit; one brother: Antonio Olivas and wife Guadalupe of Presidio, TX; one sister: Esperanza Rodriguez and husband Gabriel of Predidio, TX; eighteen grandchildren: Jennifer, Maurilio Jr., Nereida, Dalila, Ivan, Albertico, Ivon, Jose, Daniel, Arely, Adrian, Eyuren, Dalia Tatiana, Anahi, Adriana, Andrea, Alejandra, Daniela; 10 great-grandchildren: Eduardo Jr., Alejandro, Isabella, Alvaro Davian, Julian, Ezekiel, Landen, Rylan, Samantha and Emma.

Those preceding him in death include his parents: Guadalupe and Angelita Olivas; two sons: Alvaro and Norberto Olivas; three brothers: Manuel, Humberto and Guadalupe Olivas.         

A rosary is scheduled for 7:00 pm, Sunday, August 18th, 2013 at Family Services Funeral Chapel. Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 2:00 pm, Monday, August 19th, 2013 at Saint Joseph Catholic Church in Kermit with Father Rudy Lacerna officiating. Pallbearers will include:  Maurilio Olivas Jr., Daniel Olivas, Jose Campos, Ivan Hernandez, Adrian Olivas, Rojelio Olivas, Manuel Olivas, and Baltasar Rodriguez.  Interment will follow at Kermit Cemetery. David Wayne McKay

David Wayne McKay, age 48, of Midland, passed from this life into his eternal one, on Friday, August 16, 2013 in Midland, TX. He was born August 28, 1964 in Lubbock, TX to Howard Donald and Lily Faye (Simpkins) McKay. He was the previous owner of McKay’s Furniture in Midland and worked as a land surveyor for oil and gas.

David had a heart of gold and could light up a room when he walked in. There was never a dull moment with him around. He enjoyed the outdoors and was full of life. He enjoyed hunting, fishing and playing golf. David was a wonderful son, brother and above all father, who loved his children dearly.  He loved to be around people and had a great personality. David had many friends that loved him and will miss him dearly.

Those left to cherish his memory include his father: Howard McKay and wife Alva of Kermit; three daughters: Addison Dorisa McKay, Alexis Faye McKay and Alyssa Shaye McKay, all of Midland, TX; and one sister: Diane Sutton and husband Roger of Kermit.

His beloved mother preceded him in death.

Memorial services are scheduled for 2:00 pm, Wednesday, August 21, 2013 at Family Services Funeral Chapel with Brother Joe Carrasco officiating. Tammy Lynn Barron

Tammy Lynn Barron, age 47, passed from this life on Thursday, August 29, 2013 in Odessa, TX. She was born on May 13, 1966 in Andrews, TX to William Douglas and Carolyn (Pilkington) Barron.

Tammy was a very loving and caring person who loved making people happy. She enjoyed camping, traveling and fishing.

Those left to cherish her memory include her sons: Michael Douglas Boring and wife Alyson of Lovington, NM and Malachi James Boring of Roswell, NM; one daughter: Jamee Barr and husband Michael of Lovington, NM; Step mother: Pat Miller of Notasulga, AL; four sisters: Gena Hepburn and husband Gary of Perry, GA; Cassie Lewis and husband Marty of Earl Park, IN; Jennifer Hickman and husband Earl of Bowman, SC and Christy Griffith of Notasulga, AL; one grandchild: Taryn Barr.

She is preceded in death by her parents: William and Carolyn Barron and her grandmother: Lois Moncrief.

BB Kilgore
Berry “Buck” Bannon Kilgore Jr.

Berry “Buck” Bannon Kilgore Jr., age 93, of Kermit, passed from this life on Thursday, August 29, 2013 at Silver Pines Nursing and Rehabilitation Center in Bastrop TX. He was born August 28, 1920 in Midlothian, TX to Berry Bannon Kilgore Sr. and Amanda (McCain) Kilgore. He graduated from Oaklawn High School in 1938.

Berry was a long time resident of Kermit, TX and was known as “Buck” by many in the community. He had a deep love for Kermit, and he was an active member of the community. He was one of the founders of “Westside Church of Christ”; as well as, the first Afro American to run for county commissioner in Winkler County. He was a hard working man who took care of his family and was a loving grandfather. At one time, he worked for DSR Trucking and worked for Winkler County until he retired. He was an entrepreneur, who opened and operated a paint and body shop, steam cleaning business and a BBQ business.   

Those left behind to cherish his memory are his son: Mike Kilgore of Kermit. TX; one daughter: Judy Jones and husband Albert of Austin, TX; two sisters: Eunice Simmons of Oklahoma City, OK and La Rue Miller of Midlothian, TX; five grandchildren and six great-grandchildren. 

He was preceded in death by his wife: Bernice Kilgore; his parents: Berry and Amanda Kilgore; one sister: Earlene Spencer; two brothers: L.A. Kilgore and Seth Kilgore; one daughter-in-law: Carolyn Kilgore; and niece:  Edith Neal. 

Family visitation will be 7:00 to 9:00 pm, Wednesday, September 4, 2013 at Westside Church of Christ. Funeral services are scheduled for 1:00 pm, Thursday, September 5, 2013 at Eastside Church of Christ, officiated by Brother James Alexander. Pallbearers will include: Billy Thompson, Brain Awbrey, Steve Luevano, Joe Carrasco, Raul Marquez and Marty Belcourt. Honorary Pallbearers will include: Mike Kilgore, Barry Kilgore Jr., Rex Kilgore, Matrix Kilgore, Nathan Cammon and Jonathan Cammon and Christian Cammon. John E. Harber

John E. Harber, age 86, of Robert Lee, TX was reunited with his beloved wife on Tuesday, September 3, 2013. He was born on October 22, 1926 in Moran, TX to Newton Charley and Rose Eva (Collingsworth) Harber.  

John was a member of the Moran Masonic Lodge No. 863 and was a 32 degree Free Mason. He was a hard working man who was very devoted to his job. John loved fishing, music (Ray Price was amongst his favorite) and gardening. He had a green thumb and could grow anything. He was nicknamed “Father Daddy” by his children and “Jelly Bean” by his uncle. John was a great husband, father, brother and grandpa and will be missed dearly by all the lives he touched.  

John is survived by his two sons:  Tom Prichard and wife Beverly of Robert Lee, TX and John Prichard and wife Beth of Loving, TX; one sister: Olivena Allbritton of Trout, LA; 4 grandchildren and 4 great-grandchildren. 

Preceding John in death were his wife of 48 years: Peggy Jo (Pierce) Harber; his parents: Newton and Rose Harber; and his brother Charley Harber.

A family visitation is scheduled from 12:30pm -1:30 pm, Friday, September 6, 2013. Graveside services will follow at 2:00 pm, Friday, September 6, 2013 at Kermit Cemetery in Kermit, TX, officiated by Bro. Dudley Mullins.  Arrangements are entrusted to Family Services Funeral Parlor.

Wilma Inez Hill

Wilma Inez Hill, age 82, passed from this life on Sunday, September 15, 2013 at Monahans Managed Care Center in Monahans, TX. She was born in Hamlin, TX on February 18, 1931 to the late Joseph Robert and Mary Elizabeth (Earls) Rhoton.

Wilma loved playing with her grandchildren and was involved many years with the Girl Scouts. She enjoyed fishing, playing games and dominoes. One of her favorite board games was “Wahoo".

Those left to cherish her memory include her three sons: Robert L. Hill and wife Rita of Kermit, TX, James M. Hill and wife Marsha of Kermit, TX, and Gerald M. Hill of Odessa, TX; two daughters:  Debra Drummond and husband Mark of Saratoga Springs, NY and Leatha Martinez and Rickie Collins of Wink, TX; one brother: Robert Rhoton Jr. and wife Nell of Amarillo, TX; one sister: Dora Burrows of Wichita Falls, TX; eight grandchildren and numerous great-grandchildren.

Preceding her in death is her husband: L.V. Hill; her parents: Joseph and Mary Rhoton; two sisters: Dorothy Dubois and Delma Waltrip; and one daughter-in-law: Charolette Hill. 

Funeral services will be held at 2:00 pm Tuesday, September 17, 2013 at the First Baptist Church in Wink, TX officiated by Brother Richard Ray. Pallbearers will be: Shannon Drake, Mark Drummond, Glenn Underwood, Derek Rippe, Zack Hill and Rickie Collins. Honorary Pallbearers will be: Gene Snow, Scott Brown, Jr. Mata ad Mike Claburn. Interment will follow at the Kermit Cemetery.

Barney Ray Browning

Barney Ray Browning, age 51, of Kermit, passed from this life on Sunday, September 22, 2013 at his residence. He was born on August 30, 1962 in Alexander City, Alabama to Ronald H. Browning and Lois G. (Colley) Browning. He worked as a roughneck in the oilfield.

Barney was a good ol’ guy who was fun to be around. He enjoyed fishing and hunting in his spare time and hanging out with family and friends. Barney will be missed dearly by those who knew and loved him.

Those left to cherish his memory include his mother: Lois Browning of Kermit; son: Barney Ray Browning Jr. of Birmingham, AL; daughter: Winter Marie Browning of Birmingham, AL; brother: Leon Browning and wife Debbie of Odessa, TX; sister: Denise Graham of Kermit, TX; ex wife: Summer Browning of Birmingham, AL and two grandchildren: Elijah and Levi Browning.

Preceding him in death are his dad: Ronald H. Browning and one brother: James Browning.

Funeral services are scheduled for 11:00 am, Thursday, September 26, 2013 at Family Services Funeral Chapel with Leon Browning and Joe Fitzpatrick officiating. Cremation will follow.  Arrangements are entrusted to Family Services Funeral Parlor.
