Elmore Dewey “Shorty” Ray

Elmore Dewey “Shorty” Ray passed peacefully from this life on Saturday, November 3, 2012 at the Hospice House in Odessa.  He was born on March 1, 1923 in Cyril, OK to Elmer and Lou Ann Ray.  Although he moved to Texas in 1947, and loved it here, he always called Oklahoma his home.

Dewey married Vila Jean Gilliam in Cyril, OK on June 7, 1946 and they were married almost 65 years at the time of her death in 2011.  We are certain that Mother was waiting to meet Daddy as he entered the Gates of Heaven.

Mother and Daddy moved to Alice, TX in 1947, when he took a job with Mobil Oil.  Their two older children, Vicki and Ricky, were born while they were in Alice.  In 1949, the Alice job ended, but Mobil told Daddy that there was a job in Kermit, TX, if he wanted it.  Thus, the Ray family moved to Kermit and lived there until he was transferred to Odessa in the early fifties.  Their youngest daughter, Jeanna, was born in Odessa.  Daddy was transferred back to Kermit in 1960, and he resided there until his death.

A welder for Mobil Oil, Daddy worked on locations all over West Texas.  He was working at the Coyanosa Plant when it exploded in the early sixties, and he worked day and night helping Red Adair’s team to put out the fire.  Afterwards he was given a certificate of appreciation from them for his work.  In addition, he had an independent welding business in the evenings and weekends, and it was once said that it would take two other men to keep up with the work he did.  In his later years with Mobil, he was promoted to a position supervising the building of facilities in different locations in Texas.  After 37 years with Mobil Oil, he retired in 1984.

Daddy loved Kermit and especially the fighting Yellow Jackets.  He was an avid sports fan, especially when his son, grandsons, his great-grandson or great-granddaughter were playing.  He and Mother were active members of the Booster Club when their grandsons were in sports, and they spent hours blowing up balloons and decorating for banquets.  They were totally surprised and honored one year when they received the Chamber of Commerce Youth Award because of all the volunteer work they had done for the Booster Club.

A member of Trinity Christian Church for over fifty years, Daddy was a Christian whose life exemplified honesty and integrity.

After retiring, he and Mother took golf lessons, and he was hooked.  He loved hacking the ball around and could be found at the golf course until the last few years, either playing or hunting for golf balls.  He also enjoyed traveling from coast to coast in their motor home.

One of the highlights of his day was going to Jerrie’s Cafe for coffee with his friends.  We want to thank he coffee group for watching out for him and sometimes even following him home to ensure he got there safely.

His parents, siblings, and his beloved wife Vila preceded Daddy in death.  Left to cherish his memory are his three children:  Vicki Neace and husband Mike of San Angelo, TX, Ricky Ray and wife Jeanette of Arlington, TX, and Jeanna Mills and husband Jacky of Kermit, TX.  He is also survived by his grandchildren:  Michelle Redden and husband Mike of Arlington, Traci Ray of Arlington, Jeffrey Mills and wife Lisa of Kermit, Jason Mills and wife Jamie of Lubbock, Jared Mills and wife Victoria of McKinney, Mike Neace II of San Antonio, and Kristin Neace-Fuentes and husband Johnny of Midland.  Finally, he is also survived by great-grandchildren:  Nolan Mills, Josh Mills, Jaycie Mills, AbiGayle Mills, Jack Mills, Eli Mills, Nora Mills, Emma Redden, Jake Fuentes, Nate Fuentes, and Luke Fuentes.

The family wants to give a special thanks to Daddy’s caregiver, Dora Diaz.  We are so grateful to her for the wonderful care that she gave to Daddy.  In addition, the family would like to give a special thanks to the staff of the Hospice House in Odessa for the tender care they gave Daddy and to us.  They are truly angels on earth.

Pallbearers are his grandsons:  Jeffrey Mills, Jason Mills, Jared Mills, and Mike Neace II, great-grandson, Nolan Mills, and grandsons-in-law, Mike Redden and Johnny Fuentes.

Honorary Pallbearers are Billy Dunlap, Doug Owens, Felipe Subia, grandson Josh Mills and all his coffee drinking buddies from Jerrie’s Café.

The family will receive visitors from 6 to 8 pm on Friday, November 9, 2012 at Family Services Funeral Parlor.  Funeral services will be 2 pm, Saturday, November 10, 2012 at Trinity Christian Church in Kermit with Pastor Gene Brown officiating.  Interment will follow at Kermit Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers please make donations to the Hospice House of Odessa, Trinity Christian Church or the charity of your choice.
