Samuel Montoya, age 63, passed away Friday, April 20, 2012 in Odessa, TX.  He was born November 1, 1948 in Redford, TX, to Juan and Josefa (Urias) Montoya.

Those left behind to cherish his memory are his wife:  Altagracia Montoya of Kermit, TX; son: Samuel Montoya Jr. of Norfolk, NE; brothers: Juan Montoya Jr. of Jal, NM; Santos Montoya and wife Rita of Snyder, TX and Ruben Olvera and wife Esmerelda of Snyder, TX; sisters: Tersa Baeza and husband Ynez of Jal, NM; Mary E. Garcia of Wilder, ID and Gloria Avila and husband Victor of Salt Lake City, UT; and two grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents: Juan and Josefa Montoya.

Graveside Memorial services will be 10:00 am, Thursday, April 26, 2012 at Kermit Cemetery, with Daniel Kowacich officiating. Honorary pallbearers will be: Carlos Dominguez Jr.; Manuel Urias; Victor Avila; and Able Acosta.

Howard Edsol Gaddy

Howard Edsol Gaddy, age 93, passed away Monday, April 23, 2012 in Kermit, TX. He was born January 13, 1919 in San Saba, TX to Davis and Maggie (Low) Gaddy. 

Howard was a devoted family man and his daughter, Elizabeth, was the light of his life. He loved coaching and mentoring kids. He was an avid sports fan. Two of his favorite teams were the Dallas Cowboys and TCU. He was known by everyone as “Gooch Gaddy”.

Those left behind to cherish his memory are his son: Charles Gaddy and wife Maureen of Indianapolis, IN; son-in-law: Bill Brendel and wife Kathy of Corpus Cristi, TX; step-daughters: Janevelyn Melton and husband Larry of Odessa and Cindy Pass of Odessa; ten grandchildren: Brian, Patrick, Ross, Hunter, Genny, Rosemary, Charles Jr., Elizabeth, Ross and Christopher; two great-grandchildren: Cosette and Trey; and one niece: Joan Bounds.

He was preceded in death by his wife: Evelyn Gaddy; his daughter: Elizabeth Leigh; parents:  Davis and Maggie; four sisters, and a brother.

Graveside Services will be held 2:00 pm, Thursday, April 26, 2012 at Kermit Cemetery in Kermit with Bill Brendel officiating.  Honorary pallbearers will be: Bill Brendel, Patrick Brendel, Larry Melton, Chuck Gaddy, Brian Brendel, Ross Brendel, Hunter Brendel and Bill Maddux.

Maria Leonor Muniz

Maria Muniz, age 64, passed away Friday, April 27, 2012 in Odessa, TX.  She was born May 26, 1947 in Cuatemoc, Mexico.

Maria was a very funny person and there was never a dull moment around her.  She enjoyed being a mother and took a special delight in her grandkids.  Her family greatly enjoyed her cooking.  Maria was known for her green-thumb and her vast collection of frogs.

Those left behind to cherish her memory are her daughters:  Brenda Mendez and husband Manuel Torres of Odessa and Carime Muniz of Odessa; two sisters:  Josefina Contreras of Kermit and Rosa Maruffo of Kermit; five grandchildren:  April Torres, Amber Torres, Lyric Mendez, Aisha Mendez, and Braedon Ali Mendez;

She was preceded in death by her mom: Jesus Maria (Alire) Hernandez; her son: Bruce Ali Mendez and her brother: Tio Chino.

A Rosary will be said 7:00 pm, Sunday, April 29, 2012 at Family Services Funeral Chapel.  Mass of Christan Burial will be 2:00 pm, Monday, April 30, 2012 at St Joseph Catholic Church in Kermit with Father Richard Waiwood officiating.  Interment will follow at Kermit Cemetery.  Pallbearers will include: Manuel Torres, Adan Bustamante, Chris Vallejo, Jose Luis Muniz Jr., Jesus Hernandez, and Ramon Muniz.  Honorary Pallbearers will include:  Bruce Ali Mendez, Chango, and Tio Chino.

Empress Allene Rives Adams

The 88 year journey ended for Empress Allene Rives Adams on April 27th, 2012.  At the time of her passing, she resided in Midland, TX.

Empress was born to William Alfred Rives and Della Mae Tremble Rives in Fisher County on November 1, 1923. She was raised on the family farm in Fisher County, on which Empress and her six other siblings grew up picking cotton and other household chores. Empress told stories of how she and her siblings couldn’t wait for Saturdays when the family would go to town and the kids would get spending money. They would catch a “picture show” and get “soda waters”.

On February 21, 1946 Empress married the love of her life, Troy H. Adams.  Together they raised three lovely daughters. Nearly half a century ago, Empress and Troy moved to Kermit TX.  It was during this time Empress worked as a beautician with her sister. Sometime after her husband’s passing, she decided to give retail a shot working at Serv-All, which later became Lowe’s Market Place, as a cashier and stocking the candy aisle.

Empress was renowned for cooking skills both at home and at gatherings. Her chocolate sheath cake, potato salad, turkey dressing and pea salad were a few favorites among family and friends.  She spent her retirement years filled with gatherings at the Senior Citizen’s Center, church and traveling. Empress would spend long afternoons playing dominos or cards at the Senior Citizens Center with her friends. Most importantly she was an active member of Belvue Baptist Church and could be counted on to help on any of the various committees and many times would be the first to volunteer.

To her family she was affectionately called “Grandma Adams,” and even lived to give her great-great- grandchildren “loving and sugar”(hugs and kisses). Empress was the type of who put others comforts and needs ahead of her own and never backed down from helping others. She leaves behind a legacy of Christianity, good cooking, family first and many wonderful memories.

Those left behind to cherish her memories are her daughters: Rilene Hubbard and husband Tobe of Bastrop, TX, and Carol Ann Hagood of York, ME; sisters:  Elizabeth Mills of Kermit and Ruby Rives of Aurora, CO; brothers: Billy Rives and wife Jessie of Odessa TX and Rev. Weldon Rives and wife Marj of Borger TX; grandchildren: Kari Yeager of York, ME, Troy Willhelm and wife Tera of Mansfield ,TX, Kyle Hagood, York, ME, Amanda Brown and husband Randal of Kermit, TX, Empress Pando of Kermit, TX,  John Hubbard and wife Julie of Houston, TX,  Jad Hubbard and wife Deanna of Smithville, TX, Debbie Willhelm of Ft. Worth, TX, Dianna Scott and husband Rick of Monahans, TX, and Gary Willhelm and wife Laura of Wickett, TX;  21 great grandchildren, 5 great- great- grandchildren and numerous other extended family members.

Empress will be met in heaven by her spouse: Troy H. Adams; daughter: Judene Willhelm, granddaughter: Terry Kay Schimdt; brother: Riley Rives; and sister: Dorothy Cave.

Funeral Services will be 2:00 pm, Tuesday, May 1, 2012 at Belvue Baptist Church in Kermit, with Pastor Robert Matney officiating.  Interment will follow at Kermit Cemetery.  Arrangements are entrusted to Family Services Funeral Parlor.

Marguerite Gillit

Mrs. Marguerite (Turmes) Gillit, age 84, passed away Tuesday, May 1, 2012 in Odessa, TX. She was born May 9, 1927 in Breckenridge, TX to John and Willie May (Martin) Turmes.  Marguerite married her husband Donald B. Gillit on May 22, 1953 in Hobbs, NM and they celebrated 43 years together before his death in 1997.

Marguerite was a Christian woman who was a devoted to her family, taking care of her husband and kids. She loved to sew for the family and was quite the traveler.

Those left behind to cherish her memory are her son: Tobby Gillit of Myrtle, Miss; daughter: Connie Ferguson and husband Kenneth of Midland; four grandchildren:  Nikki Gillit Rodriguez, T.J. Gillit, Casey Ferguson, and Justin Gillit; and three great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her husband: Donald B. and her daughter:  Donna Lynn in 2009.

Graveside Services will be held 10:30 am (MST), Saturday, May 5, 2012 at Jal Cemetery in Jal, NM with Chaplain Larry Hood officiating.  Arrangements are entrusted to Family Services Funeral Parlor.

Maria Nieves Vigil

Maria Nieves Vigil, of Hobbs, NM passed away Saturday, May 5, 2012 in Hobbs, NM at the age of 93.  She was born in Ft. Stockton, Texas on July 1, 1918 to the late Jesus and Guadalupe (Campos) Vigil.  She began her working career at a laundromat in Pecos and laundering uniforms for the soldiers at the Rattlesnake Bomber Base of Pyote (who always passed inspection!).  Maria retired after cooking 20 years for the Williams Café in Wickett, TX, then 25 years for the Green Top Drive Inn in Kermit.  She was Catholic.

Maria loved the outdoors and nature.  Although as a homemaker, she rarely had free time, she enjoyed working outside in her yard.

Those left to cherish her love and memory include three sons:  Abelardo Millan of Big Lake and Oscar and Arturo Vigil, both of Hobbs; three daughters:  Gloria Teague-Vigil and Norma Baeza, both of Hobbs and Anna Sedillo of Truth or Consequences, NM; twenty-two grandchildren; twenty-six great-grandchildren; and three great-great grandchildren.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her son:  Efren Vigil; daughter:  Stella Ladd; four brothers and three sisters.

Rosary will be said 7:00 pm, Monday, May 7, 2012 at Family Services Funeral Parlor.  Funeral Mass will be celebrated Tuesday, May 8, 2012 at St. Joseph Catholic Church of Kermit at 10:00 am, officiated by Fr. Richard Waiwood.  Interment will follow at Kermit Cemetery.  Arrangements are entrusted to Family Services Funeral Parlor.

Marzie Hensley

Josie Marzie Hensley, former resident of Kermit for over 30 years, passed from this life Saturday, May 5, 2012 at her brother’s home in Noble, OK at the age of 93.  Marzie was born in Alma, OK on October 6, 1918 to the late David A. Monden and Alta Augnee (Dunn) Monden.  She married Howard Hensley in Borger, TX on April 3, 1942.  They enjoyed over 38 years together before separated by his death on November 13, 1980. 

Before her retirement, Marzie worked as an office manager and a dispatcher for a concrete plant. She was an avid reader and enjoyed spending time with her many friends.  She was a member of 1st United Methodist Church.

Those left to cherish her love and memory are her brother:  Ancil Wayne Monden and wife Ruth of Noble, OK; numerous nieces and nephews; and her special friend: Dot Norton of Kermit.

In addition to her parents and beloved husband, she is preceded to her Heavenly home by her siblings, three brothers and three sisters.

Graveside services will be 10:00 am Wednesday, May 9, 2012 at Kermit Cemetery, officiated by Rev. John Wade.  Arrangements are entrusted to Family Services Funeral Parlor of Kermit.

 
Rick Dennis 

Rickford (Rick) Wayne Dennis, 56, of Streetman, TX passed away in Temple, TX on Wednesday, May 9, 2012. He was born October 1, 1955 in Kermit, TX, to Harry and Bobbye (Emfinger) Dennis. 

Rick was a cowboy who enjoyed breaking horses and working as an auctioneer. He spent some time as a stunt man and had small parts in movies and TV shows. Rick was a talented musician.  He wrote and recorded country music songs and played the guitar.

He is survived by his mother: Bobbye Dennis of Kermit; one daughter: Katrina Dennis Havill of Austin; two brothers: Harry Ryan Dennis of New Braunfels and Gregory Zane Dennis and wife Kim of Abilene; three sisters: Phyllis Jackson and husband Tom of Kermit, Madelin Walls and husband James of Round Rock, and Elayne Kuenstler and husband Oscar of LaGrange.

He was preceded in death by his father: Harry Dennis and sister: Daun McLeroy.

Graveside Services will be held at 2:00 pm Saturday, May 12, 2012 at Lamesa Memorial Park in Lamesa, TX, with nephews: Taw and Chance McLeroy officiating. Honorary Pallbearers will be Damon Jackson, Chad Dennis, Brett Dennis, Trey Dennis, Cole McLeroy, Michael Walls, Dustin Ogg, Troy Ogg, Jace McLeroy, Evan McLeroy, James Walls, Tom Jackson, and Oscar Kuenstler.

Bill Scudder

Billy Joe “Bill” Scudder, age 79, longtime Kermit resident, went to be with the Lord on Wednesday, May 9, 2012 at Sandy Lake Rehabilitation Center in Coppell, Texas.  Bill was born in Stephenville, Texas on October 25, 1932 to Joella Cox McGlothin and Jim Scudder.  Bill married the love of his life, Margaret Ann Warren, on April 23, 1960, and they enjoyed almost 45 years together before being separated by her death on January 25, 2005.

Bill was a very active member of the community.  He was a member of Belvue Baptist Church of Kermit for over 40 years.  He participated in the famous Tumbleweed Chefs and the local Lion’s Club.  Bill was very patriotic and served our country in the US Army for six years during the Korean Conflict then worked at the post office, retiring after 33 years of service.  His word was his bond and a handshake was as good as a written contract with Bill.  Bill enjoyed the later years of his life spending quality time with his family watching his grandsons play football and baseball along with watching his granddaughter perform during halftime for the high school football games.  Hunting and fishing were among his lifelong passions.

Those left to cherish his memory are his daughters:  Vickie McClary and husband Bryan of Sugar Land Texas, Nancy Sullivan and husband John of Coppell Texas; and four grandchildren:  Chad McClary and wife Brandy of The Colony Texas, Colby McClary of Sugar Land, and Lauren and Ryan Sullivan, of Coppell.

 Funeral services will be at 10:00am on Saturday, May 12, 2012 at Belvue Baptist Church in Kermit and officiated by Brother Bill Campbell.  Interment with military honors will follow at Kermit Cemetery.  Arrangements are entrusted to Family Services Funeral Parlor.

Grace Lee Mann

Grace Lee Mann, age 99, longtime Kermit resident, went to be with the Lord on Monday, May 21, 2012 at the Cambridge Square Retirement Center in Rosenberg, Texas.  Grace was born on September 26, 1912 in Necessity Community near Ranger, Texas to Ernest Madison Jennings and Charlie Angeline Eubanks Jennings.  Grace was the fourth of nine children born to the Jennings family and was the last to survive.  Grace graduated from Ranger High School in 1932 and took several courses at Ranger Junior College.  She met Harvey Mann in Oct. 1934 and they were married Feb. 23, 1935. 

She was preceded in death by husband: Harvey and son: Hal. 

She is survived by her son Rex Lee Mann and wife Carola of Richmond, TX.  Other survivors include grandchildren:  Gina Bairrington of Fort Worth, TX, Travis Mann of Leander, TX, Stephen Mann of Poolville, TX, Michael Mann of Kerrville, TX, and Capt. Eric Mann of Clovis, NM; and great-grandchildren:  Ryan Bairrington, Whitney Reeding, Courtney Bairrington, Che Mann, Taylor Schaffner, Tyler Schaffner, Tyler Mann and Cody Mann.

During her life, Grace was faithful to her Savior Jesus Christ and served in many capacities of her beloved First Baptist Church of Kermit.  She taught Sunday School Classes, was a Sunday School Dept. Superintendent and a sponsor for the Girls' Auxiliary.  She loved going with her family to summer camp at Paisano Baptist Encampment in the beautiful Davis Mountains of West Texas. 

Grace loved cooking for her family, going on vacations, and oil painting.  She was a successful business owner of a children’s clothing store in Kermit known as “The Jack and Jill Shop”.

Graveside services will be at 2:00 pm on Saturday, May 26, 2012 at Kermit Cemetery in Kermit, TX and officiated by Brother Philip Coats.  Arrangements are entrusted to Family Services Funeral Parlor.

Pearl Virginia Glass

Pearl Virginia Glass, age 90, of Kermit passed away Tuesday, May 22, 2012 in Monahans, TX. She was born April 17, 1922 in Newton, KS to Jesse and Frieda (Hankey) Geer.

Pearl enjoyed fishing, sewing, knitting, crocheting and loved to cook. She was known for her green thumb and could grow anything.

Those left behind to cherish her memory are her three sons: Jerry Glass and wife Shirley of Medora, KS,  Pete Glass and wife Zelma of Sweetwater, TX and Carl Glass and wife Cruz of Kermit, TX; one daughter: Nancy Forbes of Kermit, TX; seven grandchildren: Virginia Snow and husband Andrew, Shaynne Glenn and husband Tom, Jessica Romjue and husband Billy, David Glass, Cody Glass, Michael Glass, Daniel Glass, and Pearl Poole; eighteen great-grandchildren: Jeremy Glass, Ethen Glass, Gabriella Glass, Jermiah Romjue, Elizabeth Snow, Sarah Snow, Gerri  Snow, Mendy Peak, Dena Glass, Jessica Glass, John Aaron Glass, John Aaron Poole, Terri Lee Moore and husband Robert, Ronnie Sanders, Jerry Sanders and Amanda Sanders; and seven great-great-grandchildren: Frieda Polland, Lucas Sanders, Nola Sanders, Nicole Hiveley, Tiffany Hiveley and Madison Hiveley.

She was preceded in death by her husband: Harley Glass; one son: Buddy Glass; one daughter: Charlotte Glass; and four grandchildren: Martin Glass, JoLyn Poole, Jackie Glass Douthit and Sammie Ingraham.

Private memorial services will be held at a later date. Arrangements are entrusted to Family Services Funeral Parlor.

Priscilla Ann Gilbert

Priscilla Ann Gilbert, age 68, passed away Saturday, May 26, 2012 in Kermit, TX. She was born November 16, 1943 in San Angelo, TX to Charles and Evelyn (Herring) Duncan.

Priscilla loved gardening, cooking, laughing, and telling stories. She was artistic and enjoyed painting and ceramics. Priscilla was an amazing athlete and loved to hunt, fish, play volleyball and swim. She taught the summer program at the pool for 12 years.

Those left behind to cherish her memory are her husband: Brad Gilbert Sr. of Kermit; one son: Brad Gilbert Jr. and wife Tabatha of Monahans, TX; four daughters: Charla Shahn McGuire and husband Clint Mills of Friday Harbor, WA, Samatha Pruett and husband Chris of Hobbs, NM, Pallie Dollinger of Kermit, and Tara Barnett and husband Jim of Kermit; her mother: Evelyn Duncan of Kermit; two brothers: Kary Duncan of Kermit, and Gary Duncan and wife Donna of Midland; one sister: Pamela Flesher and husband H. “Bud” Kelly of Fredericksburg, TX; eleven grandchildren: Duncan, Brian, Mitchell, Button, Charles, Shelton, Ali, Nicolas, Taryn, Tanner and Gianna; one great-grandchild: Carter.

She was preceded in death by her father: Charles Duncan and one sister-in-law: Vicki Duncan.

Services will be 1:00 pm Wednesday, May 30, 2012 at the Church of God in Kermit, with Brother Eddie Whitefield officiating. Pallbearers will include: Brad Gilbert Jr., Jim Barnett, Duncan Fabbri, Button Barnett, Gary Duncan, Kary Duncan and Brian Pruett.  Honorary Pallbearers will be: Charlie Morgett, Richard Ast, Charles Barnett, Ernest Gilbert, Mitchell Pruett, Nick Barnett, Sonny Houge, Gary Bradford, Shelton Barnett, Tony Halterman, and Garren Halterman..
